The presentation of self via everyday vlogging: Analyzing everyday vlogs of Korean expatriates

Drawing on research about constructing identities through self-presentation (De Fina & Georgakopoulou, 2012) and Bamberg’s (2011a, b) sameness and difference, I demonstrate how Korean expatriates employ vlogging strategies to construct and present everyday self, especially vis-à-vis viewers. To do so, I analyze 27 daily vlogs of Korean expatriates living in Hong Kong, New York, and Tokyo. The vloggers present the mundanity of everyday life, using chronological organization, quick scene transitions, micro-details, and “historical present” (Wolfson, 1979). These vlogging strategies, I argue, create alignment with viewers, signaling that “my daily life is just like yours.” Simultaneously, the vloggers make everyday vlogs engaging and entertaining through offering explanatory notes and not providing translation of what is being spoken, especially when they present foreign city lives, cultures, and languages they experience by virtue of living abroad, to signal “my daily life is different from yours.” Everyday vlogging of Korean expatriates, as a type of “lifestreaming” (Marwick 2013), involves meaning making and identity construction processes through which Korean expatriates skillfully exert and express agency in (ab)normalizing their expatriate self and life, in connection to others, and thus achieve self-legitimacy and -empowerment.

Negotiating converso identities in the inquisition courtroom

Abstract This paper explores the processes of identity construction and negotiation through face work in a Portuguese Inquisition record, corresponding to the trial for Judaism of Catarina de Orta. Concentrating as much on the inquisitor’s questions as on the answers offered by the defendant, I show here that impoliteness and self-politeness co-occur in interaction in the Portuguese Inquisition courtroom discourse. On the one hand, the inquisitor makes abundant use of impoliteness strategies with at least three main aims: to exert his power over the defendant, to trigger specific negative emotions, and to attack her face and her credibility. On the other hand, the defendant’s answers display numerous features of self-politeness, aimed at saving her face from the inquisitor’s attacks and accusations. It is precisely through the interplay of impoliteness and self-politeness that the two competing narratives proposed by the accuser and the defendant are constructed and re-elaborated during every interrogation.

Development and Dilemmas of Mass Democratic Identity Construction in the Context of the Myanmar Coup: An Analysis of Political Narratives

This study examines the process of mass democratic identity construction in Myanmar and delineates the distinct characteristics of the government's political narratives during the period of Myanmar's democratic reform. The research finds that Myanmar managed to establish a democratic identity that continues to exhibit resilience in the aftermath of the coup. This resilience, observed at the level of political narratives, can be attributed to the transcultural features of ideological construction and the prominent influence of Buddhism, both well-suited to Myanmar's deep-seated social and religious foundations. However, following the coup, the loss of agency by the original narrative source, combined with the long-standing issues within Burmese society, has resulted in several political dilemmas hampering the development of democratic consciousness. These dilemmas are characterized by an immature democratic political culture, underdeveloped civil society, and frequent ethnic conflicts. The underlying reasons for these challenges can be traced back to the limitations of democratic political culture during Myanmar's democratic reform period and the absence of historical and cultural foundations in the country's democratic political system, which may constrain the long-term development of democratic consciousness following changes in the power structure.

Hero's Legacy: Martial Strength and Race in Republican Chile

Abstract This article examines the Roto Chileno war memorial in downtown Santiago as a complex site of Chilean identity making in the republican era. Conflating two separate nineteenth-century military victories over the combined forces of Bolivia and Peru, the memorial was a physical manifestation of an intricate process of identity construction that celebrated the mestizo heritage of average citizen-soldiers while also emphasizing the idea that Chileans were racially superior compared to other South American nations. The memorial being dedicated specifically to the roto, a mutable racialized term that can be perceived as pejorative even in the present, is therefore an especially evocative example of how this conceptual combination was visually rendered to access elements of white identity. Using fine art media coverage, this article highlights the entangled relationship between memory, nationalism, and race in late nineteenth-century Latin America to consider the role that militarism and masculinity play in the construction of whiteness.

Self‐determination theory and its implications for team motivation

AbstractDespite decades of research on teams, there are still gaps in our understanding of motivational dynamics within teams and the emergence of team‐level motivation. We advance a new team motivation model that invokes self‐determination theory (SDT), multilevel theory, emergence processes, and identity construction. Using the conceptualization of motivation offered by SDT, we define team motivation as a collective source of energy driving the direction, intensity, and persistence of team activities. By using SDT to develop the process‐based team motivation emergence model, we describe the role of human psychological needs that are involved in the emergence of this collective construct. An interpersonal feedback loop intertwined with a team process feedback loop predict how team members' individual motivations converge and then transform into team‐level motivation through a process of identity construction. Propositions for testing the model are advanced, as well as suggestions for methodological and analytical considerations.

예술가교사(teaching artist) 체험에 관한 생애사 연구

The purpose of this study is to explore the identity that teaching artists construct as they experience arts and culture education. Through the life history research method, I looked in depth at the present lives of eight visual arts major research participants from their childhood to the present day as teaching artists and how the art educational experiences permeate the artists’ lives and construct their identities. First, while un-derstanding the overall life process of teaching artists, I looked into the main background of working as artists and teaching artists. Next, the period when research participants took the role of teaching artists can be described in four categories: art class process, experiences with fellow teaching artists, experi-ences with class participants, and difficulties and conflict situations in art education activities. Based on the analysis of the data, four main meanings were derived: 'a prop for artists to work as artists', 'a coor-dinate to confirm identity', 'a channel to communicate with society', and 'social contribution through art education'. The significance of this study is that it examines the process of identity construction from the perspectives of the teaching artists based on the life histories of the research participants, further expand-ing the identity discussion of the teaching artists and using it as a basis for understanding teaching artists in Korea.

A Qualitative Study of Adolescents from Refugee Backgrounds Living in Australia: Identity and Resettlement.

Identity formation among young people from refugee backgrounds is complex, as it occurs while they are both integrating into a novel cultural landscape and navigating the intricacies of adolescence. The present study explored sense of identity and experiences among refugee youth in the context of resettlement. Nineteen young people (15-18 years) from refugee backgrounds, settled in Brisbane, Australia, took part in the study. An individual semi-structured interview, drawing upon the Tree of Life method, was used. The thematic analysis (TA) methodology was adopted, and several themes emerged: experiencing changes in family roles; experience of belonging; experience of bonds with lost loved ones; dealing with emotions in a new context; experience of self in the context of change. There was one emergent overarching theme of meaning-making in the context of change. These themes were explicated within the framework of social identity and sociocultural theories, which emphasises the dynamic co-construction of identity through the interplay of belonging and meaning-making within specific contextual settings. This study highlights the fundamental role of social context, particularly the fostering of school belonging, in the multifaceted process of identity construction. The findings identify the importance of integrating multiple identities and experiences to develop a comprehensive and resilient sense of personal cohesion and selfhood.

Social Theory and Navigating Indeterminacy: A Configurational Analysis of Iranian Youth’s Identity Construction in Contemporary Iran

An emerging disparity within contemporary social science highlights a disconnection between the world in the process of metamorphosing and cosmopolitanization and the knowledge of the social world that is still trapped in the cognitive assumptions of modern episteme, which provided the conditions for the emergence of modern social sciences a century ago. This divide inhibits the efficacy of social analysis in comprehending and elucidating contemporary phenomena. This article advocates for a shift in the ontology of social theory and science towards the cosmopolitanization of the world, characterized by the prioritization of indeterminacy and fluidity in the construction of social phenomena. It investigates the epistemological implications and prerequisites of this ontological transformation, favoring a post-foundationalist approach as the most suitable epistemological framework. In response to the challenges posed by the uncertainty and indeterminacy of cosmopolitanization, after reviewing some of the existing theoretical efforts to address and provide alternatives to this challenge, the article proposes the examination of social configurations as the most fitting subjects for study. This approach necessitates the suspension of conventional, given, regulated categories, and trans-historical theories. It underscores the importance of recognizing configurations as incomplete, contingent units shaped within specific historical contexts and moments. The fluidity, relationality, and indeterminacy of configurations situated between the universal and the singular make them suitable for analysis at the level of particular. After elaborating on the most important features of social configurations, finally, by employing the proposed theoretical framework, this article aims to investigate its effectiveness in analyzing the process of identity construction among Iranian youth in Tehran in the context of the cosmopolitanization of reality, particularly in the face of the Islamist regime of Iran’s official politics of identity. Through a review and revision of selected empirical studies on youth identity construction in the consumer spaces of Tehran, based on the idea of social configurations within the framework of cosmopolitanization, it is argued that the genuine understanding of identity politics in contemporary Iran is not rooted in conventional analytical norms and categories but rather in a comprehensible conceptual apparatus characterized by fluidity and indeterminacy, capable of effectively making sense of the conflict between the politics of determinacy and indeterminacy in Iranian everyday life.

Defend and remould–residents’ place identity construction in traditional villages in the rural tourism context: a case study of Cuandixia village, Beijing

This study aims to elucidate the process and internal mechanism of place identity construction in traditional villages under the impact of tourism by taking Cuandixia village as a case. The research methods comprise participatory observation and in-depth interviews with the residents. The main results are as follows: the impact of tourism on traditional villages is mainly reflected in space reconstruction, livelihood change, social relations restructuring and culture change; under the impact of tourism, the representation of residents’ identity construction shows complexity, with positive and negative effects; and the place identity construction of residents affects their perception of and attitudes toward tourism. Moreover, self-esteem and self-efficacy principles play a key role in their perception of tourism. This study provides some reference for further investigation of the tourism development model and the mental mechanism of residents in traditional villages.

A Comparative Approach to Identities in Toni Morrison’s and Léonora Miano’s Novels

Women writers from the African Diaspora are committed to the question of identity. They construct extraordinary imaginary worlds, sometimes closely linked to their host societies or those of their ancestors. This in-between-cultures characteristic explains the plurality of identities that unfold. The desire to assert their rights and acquire financial mobility forces the fictional subjects evolving in these spaces to embark on a frantic quest for material goods. But to preserve their cultural heritage, influenced by that of elsewhere, they undertake a process of identity construction. Through these narrative strategies, a transgressive practice emerges whose aesthetic aim is to advocate justice. The novels surveyed depict several female figures whose convergent and divergent aspects merit in-depth critical analysis. To this end, the comparative approach will elucidate two major axes, namely "emerging identity forms" and "socialization strategies".

Doing difference differently: Identity (re)constructions of adults with acquired disabilities.

The acquisition of a disability impacts one's corporeality and has been found to destabilize one's sense of personal and social identity. The article explores the psychological and behavioral adaptation strategies that are employed in response to resisting, incorporating, and/or integrating disability into one's identity. We refer to a study that considered factors that facilitate and/or impede disability identification, aiming to investigate the trajectory that the process of identity (re)construction takes. Seven individual, in person, semistructured interviews were conducted with adults with acquired physical and sensory disabilities. Data underwent thematic analysis. To encapsulate the intrapersonal as well as interpersonal dynamics inherent in identity (re)construction, the analysis was guided by an interpretative phenomenological lens and social identity theory (SIT). Disability identification is a complex and contradictory phenomenon, with strategies of resistance, incorporation, and/or integration fluctuating by setting and circumstance. These findings represent a significant departure from SIT literature-participants rather made use of more collectivist as opposed to individualistic adaptation strategies. Arguably, progress is being made with regard to disability pride, opening up a space for more positive and affirming disabled identities. Furthermore, disability identification is largely facilitated by greater opportunities for political advocacy and social support-online and in the disabled community. However, stigma-internalized and external-is still a major inhibitory factor to disability identification. Recommendations for rehabilitation programs and psychological professionals working with acquired physical and sensory disability are proposed. Constructing Identity Through Sex-Consumption: The Consumerist Narratives of Israeli Men Who Pay Women for Sex

ABSTRACT This study examined how consumerism shapes the identity construction processes of Israeli men who pay women for sex (MPWS). Using the theoretical framework of symbolic interaction and the theoretical concept of extended self, we explored how Israeli MPWS extend their selves through sex-consumption. To this end, we conducted in-depth semi-structured interviews with 23 Israeli MPWS. An interpretive epistemology and a constructivist grounded theory methodology guided the data-analysis. We conceptualized three dynamics of self-identity construction processes through sex-consumption: Extending the self through assimilation of products or experiences, Extending the self through the purchasing process, and Extending the self through consuming the imagined. The findings revealed a complex process, whereby MPWS attribute various and contradictory meanings to their possessions, their consumerist experiences, and their purchasing processes. We conclude that consumerism is central to the meanings that MPWS attribute to their engagement in the sex industry. Thus, the theoretical framework of consumerism should be further applied to future studies in this field in order to gain a nuanced and deeper understanding of MPWS and the phenomenon of sex consumption.

Discourse Practices and Identity Remodeling of Hosts on Live Streaming Platforms under the Background of Informatization

Abstract In the age of informationization, webcasting has gradually become an essential form of media. On the live broadcasting platform, hosts transmit information through discourse practice and continuously reshape their identities, a phenomenon of great significance in both academic and practical fields. Qualitative and quantitative methods analyze the host’s discourse characteristics and identity construction process. It is found that the moderator’s discourse patterns are mainly affectionate, humorous, simple and commonplace, and the role of discourse practice in the construction of identity is revealed through Foucault’s discourse theory and the SMCR communication model. The empirical analysis shows that the hosts’ discourse themes in beauty and fashion account for up to 20% of the total, and enhance the communication effect through multimodal discourse (visual and auditory). The study also found that hosts reshape their identities through live discourse, such as transforming traditional TV anchors into online KOLs, to portray a pro-people and professional image. Hosts realize effective identity reshaping on live broadcast platforms through discourse practice, profoundly impacting emerging marketing models such as live bandwagon.

Building a National Identity Through Dangdut Music Programs on Television (Case Study: D’Academy 5 Indosiar)

One of the main functions of television is as a medium of entertainment. Indosiar, one of the private television stations in Indonesia, has an entertainment program called D'Academy 5, which is a talent search program for dangdut musicians and singers. Dangdut music is still considered lower-class music. This music is performed very simply, starting from a makeshift stage, wearing clothes that tend to be sexy, and much more. The mission of the D'Academy 5 program is to raise the image of dangdut music as classy music that can be enjoyed by all levels of society from various social classes. There are even many opinions that say that dangdut music is original Indonesian music, so this music deserves to be called a national identity for Indonesian people. This study aims to see and describe the process of national identity construction carried out by television media through the dangdut music program. This study is qualitative research using the constructivism paradigm. Using the four stages of the social construction theory of mass media: the stage of preparing construction materials, the stage of construction distribution, the stage of forming construction reality, and the stage of confirmation. The case study method is used as an analytical tool. The results of this study indicate that national identity is basically something that must be built and maintained. The identity built through the D'Academy 5 program is not only limited to dangdut music but also includes other cultural elements. There area social values in culture that are maintained and conveyed to the wider community. Indosiar, through this program, tries to emphasize that dangdut is Indonesian music. With the regeneration of dangdut musicians and singers in Indonesia, it is hoped that this music will continue to exist. The elevated image of dangdut music, with audiences from various social classes.

Student Identity in the EFL Classrooms

This paper explores various processes of identity construction of the students studying in English medium secondary schools in Nepal while learning English as a second /foreign language. The students in English medium schools actively participate in various classroom interactions, engage mutually in the learning process and share their feelings through which they make sense of themselves and construct various identities. By collecting information from interviews with eight participants, this qualitative study showcases that the EFL students construct multiple identities through the process of positioning, opportunity and transformation. Due to positioning, i.e., how the students situate themselves through their discursive practices and how they are situated by others, the students construct a number of identities namely, discourse identity, social identity, institution identity, authored identity, affinity identity and L1 identity, becoming and being as identity, learner identity and inner circle identity. Some of these identities, especially the former ones are constructed by virtue of opportunity whereas the later one is constructed due to transformation. These identities, however, were not found going parallel because the identities constructed in one field infused their identities in other fields.

Torn between socio-political mandates and professional identity: Teachers’ collaborative reflection on their identity tensions

Although the construction of language teacher professional identity is situated in a social, political, and ideological context, scant attention has been paid to tensions emerging from the nexus between identity construction and these contextual variables. To address this gap, this study drew on English language teachers’ collaborative reflection to provide an emic perspective on the role of the socio-cultural context in the formation of teachers’ professional identity. Eight novice and experienced English language teachers participated in two separate collaborative reflection panels (four teachers in each panel) to reflect on the role of the socio-cultural context in Iran in their professional identity construction and identity tensions. Analysis of teachers’ reflection showed that three sets of interrelated socio-cultural variables impacted the participants’ professional identity tensions: (1) macro state-level variables; (2) meso institutional-level variables; and (3) micro individual-level variables. The findings also indicated that the participating teachers took different positions to resolve the tensions they experienced between their personal ideologies and external expectations at these three levels. The main implication of this study is for institutional administrators and teacher educators to devise plans to lessen the degree of tensions that teachers might experience in their process of professional identity construction and to afford them the agency to resolve these tensions.

The logic of appropriateness of unity in diversity: the institutionalization of a city network in global governance

ABSTRACT Conceptualizing city networks as institutionalized organizations allows unveiling the internal dynamics beneath their increasing dynamism in global politics. The article taps into the insightful yet uncharted theoretical framework of sociological institutionalism to analyze United Cities and Local Governments (UCLG). The logic of appropriateness of unity in diversity drives the process of institutionalization of UCLG, constructing the common and unifying identity of the membership, while simultaneously controlling the potential multiple struggles deriving from the myriad of members’ self-interests in an organization fraught with diversity. The process of identity construction of UCLG members as global policy actors revolves around the legitimacy that stems from their governmental nature, democratic mandate, and proximity to their communities. Yet the call to unity in diversity cannot be upheld without the definition and implementation of rules that organize the interactions among members.

Editing gender and editing life: DIY, digital artivism and new forms of pedagogy in the contemporary Portuguese society

In this article, we propose a theoretical-empirical cross-section of three basic themes: female migration, DIY practices and decolonial digital artivism. Adopting the case study typology and based on the use of a qualitative methodology, fostered by an indirect autobiographical interview, we proceed to sociologically analyse the migration trajectory of Tila Capelletto, a Brazilian activist responsible for the creation of Wiki Editoras Lx. We intend to discuss digital artivism and the DIY and DIT practices and ethos promoted by Tila and Wiki Editoras, as a formula for promoting processes of diasporic identity (re)construction, resistance, existence and social change, drawing parallels with the Global South and semi-peripheral countries such as Portugal, which are embodied in the editing of Wikipedia to combat the invisibility of women in contemporary societies.

When “branding” meets “building:” the consequences of nation branding on identity in Kyrgyzstan and Estonia

ABSTRACT Despite the growing attention to the everyday, nation-building literature has paid insufficient attention to the ways in which national identity is strengthened as a side effect of measures that are not initially conceived of as nation-building activities. This article examines contemporary examples of such non-traditional processes of nation-building by reviewing the unintended consequences of political measures not directly targeting identity construction. We focus on processes of identity construction in Kyrgyzstan and Estonia that have emerged as a side effect of nation branding. In both cases, the primary goal of the national government was not necessarily to boost national identity but rather to re-brand the country for international audiences. We argue, however, that these efforts at external image projection and change have also influenced the ways in which national identities are understood, perceived, and reproduced by domestic populations.
